This 47-year-old lady had been suffering from high blood sugar for 5 years, lumbosacral pains and periarthritis of shoulders. The patient was hospitalized in our hospital for TCM treatment at 14:00 p.m. on April 1, 2013.

Essential for Diagnosis:

1. The patient had been suffering from high blood sugar for 5 years, lumbosacral pains and periarthritis of shoulders.

2. The patient complained that she suffered high blood sugar for 5 years, and she used to take some western medicine to low her blood sugar. 2 years ago, she stopped those medicines. Blood sugar value was 16.9 mmol/L. She used to suffer from lumbosacral pains and periarthritis of shoulders for 7 months, but she did not take any treatment. She did not have allergy history of any food or medicines.

3. When Mrs. Zeng came to our hospital, she felt dryness and bitterness in her mouth. She drank normal quantity of water. She also suffered gastric distension and hiccup. She felt soreness over her back and powerlessness over her knees, especially when she climbed the stairs. There were pains over her shoulders, and she felt difficulty in raising her arms. Her appetite was good. Appetite was not good. Bowel movement and urination were normal. She felt heat over her body. Her skin was dry. Feeling over her lower limbs was decreasing.

It was hard for her to raise her right upper limb and when stretched backwards, there were severe pains over the shoulders. There were pressing pains over her L4 and L5. Feeling over her lower limbs was slow, when being touched.

Diagnostic Differentiation:

TCM:

The patient suffered high blood pressure for 5 years. She had the main symptoms of dryness and bitterness in her mouth, sore back, weak knees, dizziness, dry skin and decreasing feeling over her lower limbs. Her deficiency internally was a deficiency of Yin, and exteriorly, it featured dryness and heat. This disease is located in the stomach, lungs and kidneys, especially over the lungs and kidneys. Yin deficiency and insufficiency of body fluids led to dryness in her mouth and thirst for water as well as dry skin. Kidney deficiency led to soreness and powerlessness of the back and knees as well as dizziness. According to the syndrome of pulse and tongue, her condition should be depletion-thirst disease due to deficiency of lungs and kidneys.
