Properties:
The herb is pungent and bitter in flavour, hot in nature,
slightly toxic, and acts on the liver, spleen and stomach
channels. Being pungent for dispersing cold and soothing
the liver, bitter for checking upward adverse flow of Qi
in the lung or stomach, warm and hot for supporting Yang,
the herb can warm the spleen, stomach, liver and kidney,
and is good at alleviating pain and arresting vomiting. It
is an important herb to treat cold of insufficiency type
and reversed flow of Qi in the liver and stomach, diarrhea
due to Yang deficiency to the spleen and kidney, abdominal
colic due to invasion of cold, abdominal apin.
Effects:
Soothing the liver, keeping the adverse Qi flowing
downward, dispersing cold, alleviating pain, supporting
Yang and arresting diarrhea.
Indications:
1. The herb is
often used in combination with ginseng, fresh ginger,
Chinese date for dispersing cold, lowering the adverse
flow of Qi and alleviating pain, such as Wuzhuyu
Decoction, to treat upward adverse flow of the liver-cold,
headache caused by disorder of the Jueyin Channel,
vomiting and salivation; with Sichuan chinaberry, common
fennel fruit, aucklandia root and other herbs for
dispersing cold, promoting the circulation of Qi and
alleviating pain, to treat accumulation of cold in the
liver channel, abdominal colic due to invasion of cold and
abdominal pain; and with cinnamom twig, chuanxiong,
Chinese angelica root and other herbs for warming the
channels, dispersing cold, regulating menstruation and
alleviating pain, such as Channel-Warming Decoction, to
treat cold and deficiency of Chong and Ren Channels,
irregular menstruation, and cold and pain in the lower
abdomen.
2. The herb is
often used in combination with pinellia tuber, dried
ginger and other herbs for warming the middle-jiao,
dispersing cold, lowering the adverse flow of Qi and
arresting vomiting, to treat cold of insufficiency type in
the middle-jiao, stomachache, vomiting and hiccup; and
with coptis root for soothing the liver, purging the heat,
lowering the adverse flow of Qi and arresting vomiting,
such as Zuojin Pill, to treat attack of the liver-fire on
the stomach, hypochondriac pain and acid regurgitation.
3. To treat Yang
deficiency of the spleen and kidney and diarrhea before
dawn, the herb is often used in combination with
schisandra fruit, psoralea fruit and nutmeg for warming
and tonifying the spleen and kidney and astringing
intestine to stop diarrhea, such as Sishen Pill.
Dosage and
Administration: 1.5-5g.
Precautions:
Contraindicated in hyperactivity of fire due to Yin
deficiency.
