Properties: The herb is bitter in flavour, cold in nature, being toxic, and acts on the spleen, stomach and liver channels. It is mainly used to expel roundworms and also has effects of expelling and killing hookworms and pinworms. Chinaberry bark is stronger than quisqualis fruit in parasite-killing effect. However, this toxic herb should be carefully used. Being bitter and cold for clearing heat, and dampness, treating tinea and stopping itching, the herb can be used to treat eczema and pruritus.
Effects: Killing parasites, clearing heat and dampness.
Indications:
1. To treat abdominal pain due to roundworms, or ancylostomiasis enterobiasis, the herb can be used only in decoction or in combination with quisqualis fruit, areca seed, prepared fruit of bigfruit elm and other herbs for strengthening parasite-expelling effects. To treat Trichomonas vaginalis, the herb can be decocted with cnidium fruit for external wash.
2. To treat sarcoptidosis, tinea and eczema, the herb can be decocted for external wash, or ground into powder mixed with lard for external application.
Dosage and Administration: 6-15g for dried herb and 15-30g for fresh herb in a decoction, an appropriate amount for external application.
Precautions: Because of its toxicity, the herb should not be taken in an excessive dose. Paients with liver diseases should be prohibited to use it.
