Properties: It is acrid in flavour and warm in nature. It is tropistic to the lung, large intestine channels. Its acridness is good at promoting Qi circulation, while warmness, at moistening and relaxing the bowel. It can send down rebellious lung-qi, relieve phlegm stagnancy, relieve cough and asthma. It is indicated in the stagnancy of phlegm and Qi, cough, asthma, and chest congestion. It acts on the large intestine channel, it can also moisten and relax bowel to relieve constipation.

Effects: Sending down rebellious Qi, clearing phlegm, relieving cough and asthma, relaxing the bowel to relieve constipation.

Indications:

1. For treatment of Qi deficiency in the old, excessive phlegm and Qi stagnancy, cough with abundant expectoration, chest congestion and anorexia, it is usually used together with Semen Raphani, Semen Sinapis Albae to resolve phlegm, send down rebellious Qi, relieve cough and asthma; For treatment of cold-phlegm stasis in the lung, abundant expectoration and chest congestion, cough and asthma, it is  commonly used in combination with Rhizoma Pinelliae, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, Radix Peucedani, and other herbs to send down abnormally ascending Qi, resolve phlegm, relieve cough and asthma, such as Suzi Jiangqi Tang.

2. For treatment of dry bowel and constipation, it can be used together with Fructus Trichosanthis, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Semen Armeniacae Amarum, and other herbs for moistening bowel to relieve constipation.
